A\nmajor exhibition of international contemporary ceramic sculpture is opening at\nthe Ko\u00e7 Foundation in Istanbul in September, highlighting the enduring importance\nof the handmade and ancient mythology in art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nexhibition, Beyond the Vessel; myths and\nmetamorphosis in contemporary ceramics<\/em> will demonstrate how ancient myths \u2013\nmany of them born on the isthmus where the exhibition is being held \u2013 have\nechoed down the generations and now form the basis for an intriguing new wave\nof sculpture that combines technical virtuosity and fine modelling in clay with\nstory-telling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Istanbul\nremains a crucible of civilisation; its influence extending far into Europe and\nbeyond and this show, which positions the heritages of the Vikings,\nAnglo-Saxons, Christians, Greeks and Romans side by side, demonstrates the enduring potency of historic\nnarratives manifested in the most elemental and universal artistic material there\nis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nfocuses on how clay, often used simply to manufacture vessels and other\nutilitarian objects, is one of the compelling vehicles for expression in the\nhands of artists whose work couple exceptional skill and vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nexhibition includes works by fourteen artists from nine countries including: Sam\nBakewell, Bertozzi & Casoni, Christie Brown, Phoebe Cummings, Bouke de\nVries, Elsa Sahal, Kim Simonsson, Jorgen Haugen Sorensen, Carolein Smit, Hugo\nWilson, Klara Kristalova, Malene Hartmann Rasmussen and Vivian van Blerk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catalogue\nessays by Glen Brown, Professor of Fine Art at Kansas University and Paul\nGreenhalgh, Director of the Sainsbury Centre in the UK are featured in a full\ncolour 300-page catalogue featuring photographs by Sylvain Deleu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curated\nby Catherine Milner in conjunction with Messums Wiltshire, Beyond the Vessel<\/em> will be held between 10 September – 24 December 2019\nat the Me\u015fher gallery in Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
